Sauget, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers lose to the Gateway Grizzlies, 10-3 as the Grizzlies score 10 runs in the first 4 innings and Tyler Thompson (5-5) goes deep into the game for the Grizzlies, holding the Crushers offense down.
With the loss, the Crushers (38-55) have now dropped the opening game of their past five series. The Grizzlies (43-50) have now won four in a row to begin September.
The Grizzlies would open up the scoring in the bottom of the first. Cody Livesay singled to start the game on a ball that hopped up over first baseman Jose Barraza. Livesay went to second on groundout to shortstop by Seth Heck, then moving to third and scoring on two wild pitches.
In the second inning, the Grizzlies' Blake Brown walked to lead off the inning. Grant Buckner hit a ball to third and Brendan Costantino picked the ball up and threw to the left of Trevor Stevens. The grazed Stevens' glove and bounced on the turf. Both Buckner and Brown we're safe on the fielder's choice error. Richard Seigel then hit a fielder's choice, forcing Buckner at second and moving Brown to third. Garrett Vail hit a double to the wall in left, scoring Brown and moving Seigel to third. Ryan Johns then singled to left center, scoring Seigel. Livesay reached on a fielder's choice error by Stevens at second, scoring Vail and moving Johns to second. Heck doubled to left, scoring Johns and capping the four run inning, putting Gateway up 5-0.
The Crushers would respond with a run in the top of the fourth as Costantino and Barraza led off with back-to-back singles. With one out, Emmanuel Quiles grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Barraza at second but moving Costantino to third. Mike Devine, who started in left field, then hit a slow rolling infield single past Ben Waldrip at first to score Costantino.
The Grizzlies went to work in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Livesay singled, Heck was hit by a pitch and Craig Massoni walked to load the bases. Waldrip then singled to center scoring Livesay and Heck. With Blake Brown at the plate, two wild pitches plated Massoni and moved Waldrip to third. Brown then belted his 22nd home run to straight away center field. The Grizzlies took a 10-1 lead over the Crushers heading into the fifth inning.
The Crushers would score again in the eighth as Juan Sanchez hit his fourth home run to left field, scoring Costantino as well and cutting the deficit to seven.
For the Crushers, Matt Brankle (3-2) started his first game for the Crushers, going 3 1/3, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, on nine hits, and struck out four. He was saddled with the loss. Ryan Richardson, Kolby Moore and Devine held Gateway scoreless the rest of the way. Devine's trip to the mound was his third different position of the night (left field, third base, pitcher).
Gateway's starter Thompson, picked up the win, going 7 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, three runs and struck out nine. Collin Shaw pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of the game.
The Crushers will continue this series at GCS Ballpark on Saturday. The Crushers will start Zach Morton (5-4, 3.68) and the Grizzlies will start southpaw Jordan Spencer (3-1, 3.24). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05.
