Rockford Aviators News Release
JOLIET - The Aviators fell 9-4 to the Slammers in Joliet Friday night, dropping the first game of the year's final regular season series. The Florence Freedom and Evansville Otters also lost though and the three-way tie for the final two playoff spots remains intact heading into Saturday.
The Slammers struck twice off Payton Baskette in the first to get out to an early lead. Dusty Robinson would change that up though in the 4th though by slamming his 6th home run of the season over the left field wall to tie it at 2.
The Slammers retook the lead in the 5th, but once again the Aviators were able to climb out of a 2-run hole. A single by Collin Shaw helped score Robinson and Brian Bistagne in the top half of the 7th, tying the game at 4 heading into the final 2 ½ frames.
Unfortunately, the Slammers were able to score 5 unanswered runs over the next 2 innings to put the game out of reach. Joe Staley keyed a 2-out rally in the 7th with a double and would score on an RBI single by Mike Garza. Garza, who drove in both the runs in the 5th, finished with 4 singles and 6 RBI in the contest. They would add 3 in the 8th to put it out of reach.
The two squads meet again tomorrow at Silver Cross Field at 6:05. David Diaz is expected to start for the Aviators.
