
Garza Leads Slammers in 9-4 Win

Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers (41-53) took down the Rockford Aviators (48-46) behind an offensive show from Mike Garza on Friday night.
Joliet plated a pair in their first at bat against Rockford hurler Payton Baskette. SS Alfredo Rodriguez singled to left leading off the frame. Cf Carter Bell would be safe on a fielder's choice to second. C Joe Staley walked. 3B Mike Garza singled to right field which scored Bell. LF Jeremy Nowak did his part on a hit and run with an RBI single that allowed Staley to score and put runners at the corners. 1B Marc Flores followed with a comebacker that Baskette threw home to get Garza in a rundown, on the play Nowak slid in safely at third but was stranded there. 2-0 Slammers after one.
In the fourth the Aviators tied the game with one swing of the bat. CF Michael Hur walked and was able to jog around the bases on a RF Devon Rodriguez blast to left field.
Rockford would tie the game again in the seventh. Dusty Robinson singled to lead off. SS Brian Bistagne walked to put two on and bring in Kevin McNorton from the pen. 3B Elijah Trail was putout by McNorton, Bistagne and Robinson advanced to second and third. LF Collin Shaw singled up the middle to score Robinson. Carter Bell bobbled the ball giving time for Bistagne to score and Shaw to cruise into second. McNorton retired the next two hitters to limit the damage.
Joliet regained the lead in the bottom half. Joe Staley doubled off of reliever Eric Cendejas. Mike Garza grabbed his fourth RBI of the night with a single that scored Staley, on the play Garza would scamper to second. Jeremy Nowak followed with a double to left that plated Garza easily to extend the Slammers' lead to 6-4.
In the eighth Devon Rodriguez singled sharply up the middle which chased McNorton off the mound with two outs. Dan Tobik came in for Joliet to face Dusty Robinson who drew a walk. Joe Staley and Max Casper teamed up for a snap throw to second that caught Rodriguez off guard, he was tagged between second and third for the final out to avoid any harm.
With Patrick Dolan on the mound for Rockford, Jack Cleary was plunked to start the inning. Hunter Ridge made contact on a hit and run and everyone was safe, runners at first and second with no outs. Max Casper laid down a sacrifice bunt to push each runner up a base with one out. Alfredo Rodriguez sent a ball to left field, deep enough for Jack Cleary to tag and score, lengthening the lead to 7-4. Dolan's last hitter would be Carter Bell, who reached via the hit by pitch. David Russo came in and immediately walked Joe Staley to load the bases. Mike Garza kept his night rolling with two more RBI's and a single to left to push the lead to 9-4.
Navery Moore came in for the ninth and struck out the side. Michael Carden's six innings earned him the win (5-5), Payton Baskette got the loss (1-4). Our M & M Bank Player of the Game was Mike Garza. He went 4-for-5 with six runs driven in and a run scored in the Slammers' five run win.
