Otters Lose 10-2 for Longest Losing Streak of Season, But Still Control Own Destiny

September 4, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release

Evansville, IN- The Evansville Otters (48-46) are in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season at the worst possible time, but it might not matter. Despite losing 10-2 tonight to the River City Rascals (54-40), the Otters did not lose any ground in the Frontier League playoff chase and are still in control of their own destiny.

The game did not start off well for the Otters as starter Blaine Howell gave up two runs, one earned, in the first inning. He did strike out the side though and in fact struck out seven through the first three innings before getting shelled in the fourth. The Rascals sent nine men to the plate in the fourth, scoring six times including home runs by Taylor Ard (a two run shot) and Zach Kometani who went back-to-back.

It was smooth sailing for the Rascals from there on out although Chris Sweeney did hit his 16th home run of the season in the seventh inning, giving him 37 for his Otter career, breaking the tie he had with Jeff Goldbach for the home run king title. The Rascals and Otters exchanged runs in the eighth inning with the Otters run coming home on a John Schultz double to make it a 9-2 ballgame. The Rascals added an unearned run in the ninth for the final run of the game before the Otters struck out in order in the ninth to close out the game.

Shane Weedman was stellar in relief for the Otters as he went 3.1 innings pitched, allowing just three hits and not giving up a single run. Schultz ended the night 2-for-4 with the RBI double after once again starting 0-for-2 and Alex Cruz made his mound debut for the Otters by pitching the ninth although he did allow one unearned run in his inning.
