Otters Control Own Destiny Heading Into Final Weekend of Season
September 4, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
Evansville, IN- Despite getting swept by the Normal Cornbelters, the Evansville Otters (48-45) are still in control of their own destiny in the Frontier League playoff chase.
The Otters are currently tied for the fifth of sixth spots in the Frontier League playoffs along with the Florence Freedom (48-45) and the Rockford Aviators (48-45). If the season ended today the Otters would be on the road next Tuesday to play a do-or-die game against the River City Rascals because the Otters would win the tie-breaker if all three teams are tied at the end of the season. That scenario would place the Florence Freedom as the sixth team and the Aviators as the first team out of the playoffs. The Otters are incapable of hosting a playoff game, as they are four games behind the Rascals for fourth place with three games to go.
Although the Otters would win the tiebreaker if they ended the season tied with both the Aviators and the Freedom, if the Otters ended the season tied with just the Rockford Aviators the Otters would lose that tiebreaker because while both teams split the season series against one another, the next tiebreaker would be record against the top team in the league (which at the moment is the Southern Illinois Miners) and in that case the Otters dropped six of nine this season (a winning percentage of .333) to the Miners while the Aviators split their six games against the Miners (a winning percentage of .500).
If the Cornbelters overtake the Miners in the final three games of the season (the Cornbelters are two back of the Miners) then the Otters would win the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Aviators as the top team would then be the Cornbelters and while the Otters dropped four of their six games for a winning percentage of .333 it would still be better than the Aviators who lost seven of their nine meetings against the Cornbelters for a .222 winning percentage.
Playoff Scenario
If Top Team in Frontier League is Miners:
- If Three Team Tie between Otters, Freedom, and Aviators: Otters Fifth seed, Freedom Sixth Seed, Aviators out of playoffs.
- If Two Team Tie between Otters and Freedom (regardless of spot in standing): Otters Win Tiebreaker
- Â If Two Team Tie between Otters and Aviators (regardless of spot in standing): Aviators Win Tiebreaker
If Top Team in Frontier League is Cornbelters:
- If Three Team Tie between Otters, Freedom, and Aviators: Otters Fifth seed, Freedom Sixth Seed, Aviators out of playoffs
-Â If Two Team Tie between Otters and Freedom (regardless of spot in standing): Otters Win Tiebreaker
- Â If Two Team Tie between Otters and Aviators (regardless of spot in standing): Otters Win Tiebreaker
