Washington, PA---On a country night in Washington, PA, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to the visiting Lake Erie Crushers 6-5 in a tight game at the "House of Thrills."
In the top of the first Russell Moldenhauer, who hit two 2-run homeruns on the evening, soared one deep into left, giving the Crushers an early 2-0 advantage.
The Things' got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when first baseman Stewart Ijames doubled, scoring Rogelio Noris, who was making his Wild Things debut in left field.
During the same frame, second baseman CJ Beatty hit a two-run monster that carried well over the right field wall, scoring first baseman Stewart Ijames to give Washington a 3-2 lead.
A passed ball by Crushers right-handed starter Matt Smith, moved Ijames, who later scored on a 2-out sacrifice fly by catcher Jim Vahalik, to third.
Deadlocked at four, Moldenhauer, would break the tie by smashing another two-run blast in the top of the seventh that allowed Lake Erie to retake the lead 6-4. The Wild Things quickly responded in the bottom half of the seventh, as shortstop AJ Nunziato, doubled-in the speedy outfielder Darian Sandford, cutting the deficit 6-5.
Starter Shawn Blackwell threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits striking out five Crusher batters.
