Grizzlies Edge Rascals in Series Opener

O'Fallon, MO - Gateway outfielder Spiker Helms drove in two runs and collected two hits as the Grizzlies edged the River City Rascals 5-2 Friday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

After Alex Guthrie drove in a run with a double in the second inning, Helms, a Wildwood, MO native, picked up his first RBI of the season on a two-run double in the fourth to make it 3-0 Grizzlies.

River City (8-10) scored a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth off of Grizzlies starting pitcher Gregg Downing (2-1). The left-hander from New York allowed two runs on six hits in five innings. He walked four batters and struck out four, while garnering the win.

The Grizzlies (11-7) tacked on two more runs of insurance in the seventh inning. Antone DeJesus knocked home a run with a double and Jose Flores capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Gateway's bullpen fired four scoreless innings. Ryan Hartman pitched two innings, while Zac Treece and Richard Barrett each pitched one. Barrett collected his fifth save of the season.

Helms, Guthrie and Myers paced the Grizzlies with two hits each.

The Grizzlies and Rascals play a doubleheader Saturday. Game one is at 12:05 at GCS Ballpark and game two is at 7:05 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. Tucker Jensen (1-0) pitches game one for the Grizzlies and ace Tim Brown (2-2) has the ball in game two.
