Bats Shine in Win at Normal

Normal, IL - Preston Vancil earned his second win of the season by pitching six innings and allowing three runs. He gave up seven hits, walked seven batters and recorded three strikeouts. The Miners recorded nine hits, eight off CornBelters starter Drew Provence.

Southern Illinois opened up with the lead by scoring three runs off CornBelters starter Drew Provence. First baseman Carlos Mendez extended his hitting streak to ten games as he hit a RBI single to score center fielder Tyler Hall to give Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead. Cannon Lester grounded out to bring in the second run of the game and catcher Mario Mercedes capped off the inning with a RBI single.

The CornBelters came right back and scored two runs off Vancil. In the top of the second inning off CornBelters starter Drew Provence, the Miners scored six runs with two outs to take a 9-2 lead. Southern Illinois batted around as Carlos Mendez added an RBI to his total with a single to score short stop Tyler Stubblefield. Right fielder Ken Gregory hit a triple to score Mendez and scored on a double by Cannon Lester. Mario Mercedes continued the inning with a RBI single and an error by CornBelters first baseman Mike Schwartz allowed Carlos Colmenares to score the sixth run of the inning.

Normal added another run in the bottom of the third inning off Vancil with a sacrifice fly by left fielder Romulo Ruiz to bring the CornBelters within six runs, 9-3. Miners reliever Michael Carden struck out four in two innings of relief and Bryant George struck out two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game for Southern Illinois.

The Miners improved to 10-9 on the regular season and look for the series win tomorrow night. Cody Hall will be on the mound for Southern Illinois in search of his second win of the season. First pitch is at 7:00 pm.
