Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Norwich, Ct. - After being washed out yesterday, the Baysox and Defenders split a doubleheader Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. The Baysox took game one 4-3, led by first baseman Brandon Snyder's three RBI. Connecticut took the night cap behind a strong outing by right-hander Henry Sosa. The Baysox now stand at 30-28 on the season, 7.0 games behind Southern Division leader Akron.
In the first game, Connecticut struck first against Baysox starter Troy Patton. After loading the bases with one out in the second inning, Brock Bond grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to bring a run across. On the play, second baseman Miguel Abreu and Snyder each committed a throwing error, allowing Bond to advance to second and another run to cross the plate for the Defenders.
The Baysox answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third off Connecticut right-hander Tim Alderson. Catcher Adam Donachie reached on an error by Defenders shortstop Sharlon Schoop to start the inning. One batter later, shortstop Robert Valido singled and Snyder followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half and make the score 2-1.
The Baysox took the lead as Snyder struck again in the top of the fifth inning. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker singled to start the inning. Alderson plunked Valido and then threw a wild pitch allowing the runners to advance into scoring position for Snyder. The Baysox slugger responded with his 16th double of the season, plating both runners and giving the Baysox a 3-2 lead. Snyder's three RBI in the game gives him 44 on the season, tops in the Eastern League. He also reclaimed the league lead in batting average, going 4-7 in the doubleheader to raise his average to .352 on the season.
Connecticut did not stay down for long, getting an RBI single by Eddy Martinez-Esteve in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at three apiece. Ryan Ouellette came on in relief of Patton, who left after allowing three runs (2 ER) in 5.0 innings of work. Ouellette would work around two hits and a walk in the bottom of the sixth, preserving the tie as the Baysox looked to take the lead in the seventh.
Waldis Joaquin got the Defenders out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning, but would not be as lucky in the seventh. Third baseman Michael Costanzo walked to start the inning, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Abreu. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion followed with an RBI single into center field, plating Costanzo and giving the Baysox a 4-3 lead.
Closer Josh Perrault came on in the seventh and locked down his eighth save of the season. The right-hander took over the team lead in saves, in addition to notching his 13th consecutive appearance without allowing an earned run. In nine save opportunities this season, Perrault has not allowed an earned run while striking out twelve and walking only two.
In game two, Connecticut jumped in front again against Baysox right-hander Sean Gleason. Brandon Crawford singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI double by Adam Witter. Martinez-Esteve followed with an RBI single as the Defenders took a 2-0 lead.
The Baysox came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally against right-hander Henry Sosa. Left fielder Joe Nowicki doubled and designated hitter Rodolfo Cardona walked to put two runners on for Tucker. The Baysox leadoff hitter smacked a two-out, two-run triple into left field to knot the score at two apiece. Tucker went 3-3 in game two, finishing the doubleheader by going 4-6 with walk, a run scored and two RBI.
Gleason stayed on for the fifth, but could not hold the lead against the Connecticut attack. After getting Bond looking to start the inning, Mike McBryde and Brad Boyer singled to put two runners on for Brett Pill. The Connecticut first baseman found a hole in the left side of the defense, squeaking it through the infield for an RBI single to give his team the lead.
The Baysox could not muster anything in the seventh against Connecticut closer Dan Otero, going down in order and giving the Defenders the split. The win improves Connecticut to 33-26 on the season, improving their lead to 1.5 games in the Northern Division.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow as RHP John Mariotti (1-3, 3.38 ERA) takes on Defenders LHP Madison Bumgarner (4-0, 1.86). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
