New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Akron, OH- Adrian Martin worked three perfect innings of relief, stretching his hitless-innings streak to six in the month of June, but Nick Weglarz went 2-for-5 with two triples and five RBIs to spearhead the Akron Aeros' 12-0 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Wednesday night at Canal Park. Jeanmar Gomez and three relievers combined on a one-hit shutout for Akron, which improves its Eastern League-leading record to 38-20.
Akron built a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Losing pitcher Randy Boone started the game by walking Jose Constanza (2-for-4, 3 R, RBI, BB) and hitting Cristo Arnal (0-for-3, HBP, SF, RBI, 2 R) with a pitch. Weglarz (2-for-5, 2 3B, 5 RBI, R) then reached safely on a fielder's choice grounder, loading the bases. Fisher Cats first baseman David Cooper, who had committed only two errors all season, was charged with errors on back-to-back ground balls from Carlos Santana (0-for-4, RBI) and Beau Mills (2-for-4, 2B, R). Constanza scored on Santana's grounder, and Arnal and Weglarz both came home courtesy of the errors for a 3-0 lead. Jerad Head (2-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, R) capped the inning with a sac fly to score Santana.
The Aeros put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth when Weglarz belted an opposite-field, three-run triple to make it 7-0.
Akron tacked on five more runs against reliever Nate Starner in the fifth inning. Head and Constanza had RBI singles, Arnal added a sac fly and Weglarz stroked his second triple, a two-run drive into the rightfield corner for a 12-0 lead.
That was more than enough run support for Gomez (5-2), who struck out five and walked one over six innings of one-hit baseball. Matt Meyer, Brian Grening and Erik Stiller each pitched one scoreless stanza.
Boone (4-4) took the loss after yielding seven runs -five earned- on five hits in four innings. The right-hander walked one, hit a batter and registered one strikeout.
Martin mowed down the nine batters he faced, fanning three, but the Fisher Cats (27-33) fall a season-worst six games under .500 after being shut out for the 10th time this season and one-hit for the first time since May 10th.
New Hampshire and Akron play the finale of their three-game series at Canal Park Thursday night at 7:05pm. Fisher Cats left-hander Marc Rzepczynski (6-5, 3.45) takes the mound against right-hander Jake Westbrook (0-0, 0.00), who will be making his second injury rehabilitation start for the Aeros on his road back to the Cleveland Indians rotation. Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, June 16, to open a three-game series against the Akron Aeros, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, at 7:05pm. There will be a pre-game parade to honor students who participated in the CCSNH Fisher Cats Reading Challenge, and it's Fungo's Birthday.
