Defenders Split Doubleheader

NORWICH, CT- Connecticut split a doubleheader Wednesday night against Bowie, dropping the first game 4-3 and winning the second 3-2 to kickoff the three game series.

A leadoff walk to 3B-Michael Costanzo in the top of the seventh, came back to haunt the Defenders as RF-Ambiorix Concepcion drove in the winning run with an RBI single as Bowie took game one of the doubleheader.

The Defenders were able to crack the scoreboard first in the second inning taking advantage of two Bay Sox errors. 2B-Brock Bond at the plate with the base loaded, would ground to SS-Robert Vilado, tossing it to 2B-Miguel Abreu and his relay throw was off line and two runs came into score on Abreu's error.

Bowie would trim the lead in half when C- Adam Donachie led off the top of the third reached on a 3B- Sharlon Schoop error then later scored on a 1B-Brandon Snyder RBI single.

The Bay Sox started the fifth inning getting LF-Jonathon Tucker abroad with a leadoff single. Vilado took the first pitch from RHP-Tim Alderson in the back putting runners on first and second. Brandon Snyder drove in another two runs with a double into right center field giving Bowie a 3-2 lead.

Connecticut tied the game at three in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve bringing in CF-Mike McBryde who earlier singled.

Bay Sox closer RHP-Josh Perrault came on and closed the game out for his eighth save of the season. Earning the win was LHP-Ryan Ouellette (2-1) his second of the year. Suffering the loss was Waldis Joaquin (1-4) for Connecticut.

In game two the Defenders got solid pitching and enough hits to split the doubleheader.

Connecticut jumped on Bowie in the bottom of the fourth inning with three consecutive base hits to take a 2-0 lead. DH-Adam Witter, who rejoined the team Wednesday, drove in the first run with a double down the right field line followed by RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve's RBI single.

The Bay Sox responded with two runs of their own in the fifth. CF-Jonathon Tucker cleaned off the bases with a 2-out triple scoring a pair of runs tying the game at two all.

The game did not stay tied very long. Back to back base hits by CF-Mike McBryde and 3B-Brad Boyer put runners on first and second. Connecticut's hottest hitter 1B-Brett Pill singled and drove in McBryde for the eventual game winning run as the Defenders lead 3-2.

CL-Dan Otero came in the game in the seventh in relief of RHP-Henry Sosa. Otero got the first two hitters he faced. With two outs RF-Rodolfo Cardona sent one deep to the right field wall but RF-Mike Mooney was there to jump up and make the grab as the Defenders hung on.

Defender's starter, RHP- Henry Sosa (5-0) hurled six strong innings, allowed two earned runs off of seven hits, walked two and struck out a pair as well as remained undefeated with the win. Sean Gleason (3-5) went five innings allowing three runs as he got the loss. Dan Otero earned his 12th save of the season.

Connecticut and Bowie will tangle tomorrow at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium in the rubber match of the series. The Defenders, LHP-Madison Bumgarner (4-0) takes the bump against Bowie's RHP-John Mariotti (1-3).
