Cleveland Barons News Release
OMAHA, NE - A 28-save performance from Omaha's Curtis McElhinney led the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to a 5-0 win over the Barons on Saturday night. The shutout loss was the seventh the Barons have suffered this season.
In a penalty filled first period, that saw the teams combine for 36 penalty minutes, Omaha scored the only two goals of the period for a 2-0 advantage through twenty minutes of action. With a deflection goal Warren Peters tallied the game's opening score 4:26 into the game. A little over nine minutes later Ajay Baines converted a breakaway for his seventh goal of the year to complete the period's scoring.
Two more unanswered goals from Omaha put the game away in the second period leading to a 4-0 lead after forty minutes of action. Carsen Germyn blasted home a power play one-time slap shot for his 22nd at the 6:14 mark on a great set up from leading scorer Mark Giordano. The Knights then added another at even strength when Brandon Prust tucked home his 8th goal of the season on a rebound past Barons goalie Jamie Holden.
Making seven more saves in the third period Curtis McElhinney earned his third shutout of the year with a total of 28 stops on the night. Adding insurance to the game's outcome was a short-handed, penalty shot goal from veteran forward Craig MacDonald, his eighth goal of the year.
Tomorrow night the Barons four-game road trip continues with the final visit of the season to Peoria for a 6pm EST matchup with the Rivermen. The game will be broadcast live throughout the globe at www.clevelandbarons.net.
The Barons do not return to home ice until Thursday, March 23rd when they battle the AHL's top team, the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7pm. Tickets for that night's action are available for as little as $9 per ticket at the Quicken Loans Arena Box Office. Following the game on the 23rd the Barons will kick-start the month of April with a five-game home stand to close out the regular season with a back-to-back weekend series against the Iowa Stars on the 1st and 2nd.
