Lancaster Stormers News Release
Baseball can be such a strange game.
On Thursday evening, Lancaster banged out 20 hits and scored 19 runs. On Friday, the Barnstormers rapped out 16 more.
Unfortunately, all those hits produced just four runs in a 5-4 loss to the Road Warriors in front of a season-high 8,241 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Lancaster appeared to have the game under control. The Barnstormers struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to surge to a 4-0 lead. Matt Tupman roped a double into the right field corner with one out and took third on a soft liner to right by Gilberto Mejia. Tupman scored when starter Luke Massetti balked. Wayne Lydon's bloop dropped in down the left field line for a double that advanced Mejia to third. Tommy Everidge blasted his 25th homer of the season, a three-run shot to right center, as the lead built to 4-0. Lancaster added two more hits in the inning but could not score again.
The bottom of the sixth typified the rest of the night for Lancaster. Iggy Suarez and Tupman opened the inning with singles, and the Barnstormers appeared poised to put the game away. Newcomer Yaibel Tamayo, however, bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, and Lydon lined to center to end the threat.
J.D. Durbin cruised into the seventh on a three-hit shutout. Luis Nieblas reached on an error by Travis Metcalf at third leading off the inning, and everything crashed down. Michael Mooney followed with a bloop hit to right which spun away from Aaron Herr, putting runners at second and third. Melvin Dorta singled home one, and Josh Johnson banged a single into left to cut the lead to 4-2 and, in the process, chase Durbin.
Reliever Justin Segal picked Dorta off second for the first out, but pinch hitter Vic Gutierrez singled to right to extend the rally. Adrian Ortiz' grounder on the right side, moved both runners, and Marcos Cabral tied the game with a two-run single to center.
In the eighth, the Road Warriors struck again, this time with two outs. Mooney drilled a double to left off Tim McNab (2-4). Dorta then blooped a hit to center to score the tiebreaker.
Lancaster nearly tied the game in the ninth. Fernando Seguignol led off with a single to left and moved to second on a one-out ground ball. Brandon Jones scalded a liner to right, but Carlos Guzman sprinted in and made a sliding catch to end the game.
Saul Rivera (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings for the Road Warriors to earn the win. Adam Thomas notched his 14th save.
The rubber game of the series has been moved up to 1:00 on Saturday. Lancaster will send John Halama (5-5) to the mound against fellow lefty Miguel Martinez (5-11). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
