Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Bridgeport, CT - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs split a doubleheader with the Bridgeport Bluefish on Friday night at Harbor Yard, winning game one 1-0 before

falling in the nightcap 3-2. The Blue Crabs leave Bridgeport one game behind the Bluefish for a potential wild card spot in the Atlantic League playoffs. The

doubleheader was necessitated with Hurricane Irene expected to make landfall Saturday night or Sunday morning.

In game one, the Blue Crabs left seven men on base through the game's first four innings before leftfielder Ben Harrison finally came through with a two-out RBI

single to give the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead. Southern Maryland wound up leaving 10 men on base despite registering 10 hits for the seven-inning affair.

The Bluefish had a couple of opportunities to score. In the first inning with a runner at second and two out, first baseman Wes Bankston lined a single into left.

However, Harrison came up throwing and gunned down third baseman Luis Lopez at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

Bridgeport had another opportunity in the sixth as centerfielder Adam Greenberg doubled with two out. But Green was on his game as he struck out second

baseman Andres Perez on three pitches to end the threat.

Finally in the seventh inning, Green retired the first two hitters he faced and was one out away from getting the complete-game shutout before issuing a single to

leftfielder Steve Moss. From there, Green was lifted for closer Jim Ed Warden who struck out right fielder Danny Putnam on three pitches to end the game and

garner his 27th save of the season.

The catalyst for the win, though, was Green who fired 6.2 innings of shutout ball. He allowed only four hits and walked none, while striking out four. Green has not

walked a hitter in his last 15 innings.

Green got the win to move to 8-5. The tough-luck loss went to Bridgeport starter Matt Pike (8-6) who gave up an earned run on 10 hits in six frames. He also walked

three and struck out one.

In game two, the Blue Crabs once again struck first as an RBI double by Christian Lopez and an RBI single by second baseman Brandon Pinckney gave Southern

Maryland a 3-0 lead in the third inning. But the Bluefish came right back in the bottom-half with two of their own on a two-run homer by Perez (13) to tie the game

at two apiece.

The game stayed tied until the bottom of the sixth where with two out and no one on, right fielder Prentice Redman (4) blasted a solo homer over the leftfield wall to

give the Bluefish a 3-2 lead.

In the seventh inning, the Blue Crabs got a runner to second with two out, but Pinckney grounded out to first to end the game.

For the doubleheader, centerfielder Adam Godwin went 3-8 with three singles and a stolen base and shortstop Tanner Townsend went 3-5 with three singles and a

run scored. In the first game, the Blue Crabs got two hits each from Harrison and third baseman Travis Garcia.

The Bluefish could only muster 10 hits for the twin-bill despite gaining a split. Lopez had two doubles for the doubleheader, while Redman went 2-3 in game two with

a stolen base.

Getting the win in game two for Bridgeport was Antonio Alfonseca (3-4) who pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning for the Bluefish. Palazzolo (9-4) took the loss after allowing

the homerun in the sixth for Southern Maryland. Rincon's save was his 21st of the season.

The Blue Crabs moved to 5-3 in doubleheader games this season, garnering their third split to go along with a sweep of the Road Warriors.

The Blue Crabs now head home to start a six-game, five-day home stand beginning with the Road Warriors on Sunday at 5:05. Southern Maryland will send right- hander Brian Slocum (4-4, 4.13 ERA) against a to-be-determined starter for the Road Warriors. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
