Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Kansas City, Kan. - A balk by T-Bones pitcher Jose Jimenez in the eighth inning brought home the go-ahead run in the RailCats 6-5 win over Kansas City on Friday night.
With the game tied at five, Ryan Babineau started the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and to third on a groundout. With Danny Pulfer batting, Jimenez was called for a balk that allowed Babineau to score, giving the RailCats a 6-5 lead.
The RailCats jumped out to the lead in the first inning behind some sloppy play from the T-Bones. Adam Klein reached on an error by left fielder Justin Bass, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The T-Bones had the answer in the bottom of the first as Bass hit a run-scoring triple and scored on a groundout to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead.
That score remained until the RailCats broke through in the fifth. Drew Martinez and Zac Mitchell started the inning with back-to-back singles and Adam Klein brought them both home with a double off the wall in left to put the 'Cats ahead 3-2.
History repeated itself in the sixth when Craig Maddox and Babineau hit consecutive singles to start the frame. Brian Kolb rifled a double down the right field line to score Maddox. Mitchell then laid down a bunt and Babineau came home on a throwing error by the pitcher Lucas Irvine to make it 5-2.
The T-Bones tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Matt Padgett crushed a two-out, three-run homer to left off of RailCats starter Will Krout. It was the sixth three-run blast allowed by the RailCats this season.
Krout allowed five runs on five hits in seven innings. Estevan Uriegas and Clay Zavada worked perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with Zavada earning the save.
There were some fireworks in the seventh, as T-Bones manager Kenny Hook was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Following the balk, former RailCats pitcher and current T-Bones pitching coach Andy Shipman was ejected.
The RailCats had the leadoff runner reach in seven of nine innings, six times on singles. Four of the leadoff hitters came in to score, including Babineau with the winning run.
The series continues on Saturday night at 7:05. Southpaw Alain Quijano (1-0, 6.10) will start for Gary against T-Bones right-hander Brian Murphy (0-1, 4.50).
