Thou Doth Protest Too Much, Saints Win 11-3

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints offense continues to bang around opposition pitching as they beat up on the team with the worst ERA in the American Association, the El Paso Diablos, 11-3 on Friday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,118. The game was played under protest by the Diablos after a balk call in the third inning.

With the game scoreless in the third Adam Frost led off the inning for the Saints with a walk. Dwight Childs sacrificed him to second, and with nobody covering third, Frost raced towards third ahead of the racing shortstop Maikol Gonzalez. Dan Kaczrowski walked which put runners at the corners and that's when chaos ensued. Pitcher Ryan Bean faked to third and bluffed to first, a balk under the new rules. The Diablos argued the call and then played the remainder of the game under protest. The balk allowed Frost to score giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Joey Becker followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0 and Brad Boyer crushed a two-run homer to right, his first of the season, giving the Saints a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth Dan Kaczrowski drilled a solo homer to left, his first of the season, to give the Saints a 5-0 lead.

It remained that way until the sixth when the Diablos made it interesting by scoring three runs. Gonzalez led off with a double and, with one out, Mitch Einertson drove him home with a single to make it 5-1. Brian Joynt doubled to put runners at second and third. An RBI ground out by Jonathan Cisneros and an RBI single from Moises Montero made it 5-3. Saints starter Anthony Claggett went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out seven.

The Saints put the game out of reach in the sixth scoring a season high six runs as they sent 11 men to the plate. The Saints loaded the bases to start the inning with Frost reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Gonzalez, Childs drawing a walk and Kaczrowski singling to third. Becker drew a bases loaded walk giving the Saints a 6-3 lead. Boyer drove home two with a double making it 8-3. Boyer finished the night 2-4 with a double, homer, four RBI and two runs scored. Craig Brazell's two-run single and Brandon Tripp's sacrifice fly finished the scoring.

Eight of the nine Saints starters collected a hit and the top three hitters in the Saints order reached base safely 10 times in 15 plate appearances and scored seven runs.

The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Cole Nelson (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against Diablos RHP Carlos Monasterios (NR). It is Military Appreciation Night presented by the Minnesota Subcontractors Association. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM or in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
