St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (May 23, 2013) - The St. Paul were five outs away from winning. Then they were three outs away from winning. Finally, they were able to close out the second game in their third chance as they swept the double header with a 10-8 victory in nine innings against the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium in game two. It was the first time they had swept a road double header since July 15, 2007.

With the Saints leading 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth, in a game scheduled for seven innings, the Sioux Falls Canaries battled back. J.P. Ramirez led off with a single and with one out Jared Clark hit a two-run homer, his third of the season, to make it 5-3. Saints starter Luke Anderson left the game for reliever Dustin Klabunde. He walked the first hitter he faced and then gave up a two-run homer to Steve Domecus, his second of the season, to tie the game at five.

The Saints entered extra innings, the first regular season road extra inning game in their last 16 extra inning games, and scored three runs. In the eighth Willie Cabrera led off with an infield single to short. Jose Hernandez singled him to third and Hernandez moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out Jordan Tripp was intentionally walked to load the bases. Adam Frost followed with an RBI infield single to give the Saints a 6-5 lead. Dwight Childs added a two-run double that put the Saints up 8-5.

In the bottom of the eighth the Canaries tied it once again. Tim Pahuta led off with a walk, Domecus followed with a single and Jake Taylor walked to load the bases. Anthony Trajano cleared the bases with a double that tied the game at eight. After a walk to Nick Van Stratten put runners at first and second with no outs, Saints reliever Mikey Mehlich got out of the inning with a strike out and a double play ground out.

The Saints finally took the lead for good in the ninth when Hernandez walked with one out and moved to third on a single by Brandon Tripp. Jordan Tripp's fielder's choice ground out scored Hernandez to give the Saints a 9-8 lead. Frost knocked in Jordan with an RBI double.

Matt Meyer closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the Canaries did bring the tying run to the plate. Meyer walked Pahuta with two outs, but Domecus hit a deep fly to center to end the game.

The Saints now head home for a three game series against the El Paso Diablos beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints start RHP Anthony Claggett (1-0, 3.00) against Diablos RHP Ryan Bean (0-0, 10.38).
