Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Canaries lost both games of a doubleheader against the St. Paul Saints on Thursday night, falling 9-1 and 10-8 at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints took two of three games in the series.
In game one, St. Paul (5-2) jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Brad Boyer and RBI-groundout from Craig Brazell. The Canaries (2-5) answered with Jake Taylor's RBI double in the second inning, pulling to within 2-1, but St. Paul starter Wes Roemer (2-0) kept the Canaries from any further offense. Roemer tossed 5 1/3 innings, holding the Canaries to two hits and one run. He walked four and struck out six.
Brad Boyer extended the St. Paul lead with a two-run, bases loaded single in the fifth inning. In the seventh, two Canaries errors led to a five-run St. Paul rally, capped by Brandon Tripp's two-run double.
Adam Champion (0-2) took the loss for Sioux Falls, allowing four runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
The Canaries' second loss came in extra-innings despite rallying twice from deficits of 5-1 and 8-5 to tie the game.
Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Jared Clark and Steve Domecus each blasted two-run home runs to even the contest. Down 8-5 in the eighth inning, Anthony Trajano collected a memorable first professional hit with a bases-clearing, three-run double.
St. Paul responded in the ninth with two runs on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Jordan Tripp and Adam Frost RBI's double. Matt Meyer earned his first save of the season by shutting the door on the Birds in the ninth.
Austin Brough (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, and Mikey Mehlich (1-0) notched his first win.
The Canaries hit the road and start a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, May 24, at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
