Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Kernels got the last word against the Quad Cities this season on an Abel Baker walk-off single as Cedar Rapids beat the River Bandits 3-2 on Friday.
After 13 losses in 17 previous games to the Quad Cities (25-28, 60-62) the Kernels (16-37, 48-75) win comes in the final game of 2012 between the squads.
Baker came up in the 9th after Zach Borenstein doubled with one out in the inning. Hitless on the evening, Baker hit a single the opposite way to left field and Borenstein scored easily - his 3rd run of the game. The winning knock also extended Baker's hitting streak to 11 games.
The walk-off was made possible when Zach Wright tied the game with a near-home run in the bottom of the 7th. The Kernels catcher hit the ball deep to left field and it bounced less than a foot from the top of the short porch at Perfect Game Field to plate Borenstein and knot the game at 2.
Kernels outfielder Gary Mitchell was involved in the game's first 2 runs, even though one was for the Quad Cities. In the bottom of the 2nd, Mitchell hit an RBI single to put the Kernels up 1-0. But a half-inning later, Mitchell overthrew home plate after fielding a Nick Martini single in right field, and Matt Williams scored from third base on the error.
Martini spurred an earned run in the top of 5th when he doubled on Frank De Jiulio's final pitch of the evening to score Jordan Walton and put the visitors up 2-1. De Jiulio went 4 1/3rd innings in his start, allowing just 1 earned run while striking out 4 River Bandits. R.J. Alvarez (1-2) earned a victory after he retired the final six Quad Cities in order.
River Bandits side-armer Heath Wyatt (4-6) took a loss in a 1.1 inning outing.
