Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Lake County starting pitcher Mason Radeke allowed only two base runners over six shutout innings as the Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-3 on Friday night. The Captains won two-out-of-three in the series and dropped the Dragons to five and one-half games out of the playoff wildcard slot with 17 games to play. A crowd of 8,560 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.
Radeke (6-6) allowed just one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings, striking out six to earn the win. He allowed only one runner as far as second base.
Lake County took the lead in the second inning on a two-out solo home run to left field by Bryson Myles, his third of the year. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Lake County enjoyed a big inning. Myles reached on an error by Dragons third baseman Junior Arias to start the inning and Alex Lavisky walked. Leonardo Castillo then tripled to the fence in right-center to score two, and Zach MacPhee followed with a double to make it 4-0.
The Dragons got started in the bottom of the seventh. Three straight singles by Jefry Sierra, Joe Terry, and Yorman Rodriguez loaded the bases with no one out. Sierra scored on Kyle Waldrop's fielder's choice, and Terry scored on a wild pitch. After Sean Buckley struck out, Waldrop scored on a two-base throwing error by Castillo, the Lake County third baseman, to make it 4-3.
Lake County answered with one run in the top of the eighth and held the Dragons without a base runner over the final two innings to close out the night.
The Dragons finished with four hits, all singles, by four different players. Waldrop had the club's only RBI.
Dragons starting pitcher Robert Stephenson (2-1) worked the first five innings. The Reds 2011 first round draft pick allowed two hits and one run with three walks and five strikeouts to suffer his first career loss. Dan Jensen replaced Stephenson to start the sixth and pitched into the seventh. Jensen was credited with one inning of work and allowed two hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and no strikeouts. El'Hajj Muhammad replaced Jensen and went two innings, allowing two hits and one run with a walk and a strikeout. Mike Dennhardt pitched a hitless, scoreless ninth inning.
The Dragons (22-29) travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to meet the Fort Wayne TinCaps (31-21) on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in the first game of a four-game series. James Allen (7-3, 3.76) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Matt Wisler (4-4, 2.73). The series at Fort Wayne will be followed by three games at Bowling Green.
