South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

The South Bend Silver Hawks (61-61, 26-26) were limited to just four hits Friday and dropped the series finale with the West Michigan Whitecaps 2-0 at Coveleski Stadium. With Lake County's win against Dayton, the Silver Hawks are two games behind the Captains in the second half wild card chase.

Marcelo Carreno (7-8) took the win for the Whitecaps, hurling 5.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Keith Hessler (2-2) was saddled with the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, on seven hits over 6.2 innings. Melvin Mercedes retired the side in the ninth inning to earn his fifth save.

The Silver Hawks only advanced one runner as far as third base and tallied just three total base runners after the first inning. The Silver Hawks stranded runners on the corners in the first frame.

West Michigan took the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Jeff McVaney. The Whitecaps added a run in the fifth inning after a double from Eugenio Suarez led to a throwing error from Brian Billigen.

Right-hander J.R. Bradley worked 1.1 scoreless innings out of the Silver Hawks bullpen. Righty Jesse Darrah hurled a scoreless frame in the ninth inning.

The Silver Hawks hit the road Saturday to begin an eight-game, seven-day road trip. The swing begins with a four-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Left-hander Andrew Barbosa (2-3, 3.89) starts tomorrow for South Bend and he will be opposed right-hander Roberto Gomez (9-3, 2.59). First pitch is slated for 8:05 p.m. EST.
