Last time out...
Casey Henn (6-5) went seven shutout innings, Jacob Tanis launched his third home run of the season, and the Florence Freedom (29-42) blanked the Normal CornBelters (34-37) by a final score of 4-0 Saturday night at UC Health Stadium. The Freedom offense finally got to Normal starter Bobby Shore (3-5) in the sixth inning. With two away Sam Eberle singled up the middle. Tanis followed with a towering home run to left and Florence took a 2-0 lead. The Freedom added another run in the seventh on a Zak Blair RBI single that scored Doug Joyce, who had doubled to start the frame. Pete Levitt got a strikeout and a double play to get out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth. Then Buddy Sosnoskie added an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the eighth. Henn went seven innings, gave up only three hits, walked three and struck out five to pick up the victory.
For Starters Game One...
Peter Gehle is making his 15th start of the season today. He struggled in his most recent outing on August 4 against the Traverse City Beach Bums. Gehle went five and a third innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three in a no-decision as the Freedom won 11-9. This is his second start of the season against Normal as he suffered the loss back on June 6, going seven and two thirds innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking no one and striking out two in a 4-2 loss for Florence. Gehle, 26, is a former 27th round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2010 out of Azusa Pacific University. The Flagstaff, Arizona native spent two years in the White Sox organization before joining Sioux Falls of the American Association in 2012. He spent 2013 in the AA as well, this time with the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
For Starters Game Two...
Jorge Marban makes his first start since high school tonight. He struggled against Normal when he faced them out of the bullpen on June 8, giving up three runs on two hits in 2/3rds of an inning. He walked three in the outing as he suffered the loss. This is Marban's 31st appearance of the season. He has 11 saves this year, his fifth in professional baseball and third with the Freedom. The Miami, FL native was the closer for the Freedom the last two seasons. He was named a Frontier League All-Star in 2013 as Marban posted a 2.04 ERA and saved 27 games. Marban struck out 61 batters in 44 innings. In 2012, Marban was also effective in 36 bullpen appearances. He finished with a 2.44 ERA and 16 saves. In his professional career, Marban owns a 2.88 ERA and has struck out 184 batters in 156 innings entering the 2014 season.
Double Trouble...
The Freedom's record in double headers this season is 7-11. However this is their first double header of the season featuring two nine-inning games.
Mr. Double...
Zak Blair has 23 hits with the Freedom. 11 have been doubles. He is second on the team behind Sam Eberle (13) in doubles despite only having played in 30 games.
Home is where the wins are...
The Freedom have a winning record at home this season at 22-20.
Excellent Eberle...
Sam Eberle is first among active Frontier League players in On-Base Percentage at .433. He leads the Freedom in batting average (.318), runs scored (41), hits (76), doubles (13), RBI (35), walks (44), Slugging (.477) and OPS (.910).
