Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Traverse City Beach Bums pounded their way to a 13-8 win in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Washington Wild Things before rallying in the seventh inning in the nightcap for a 6-4 victory, earning a series victory in the process.

Traverse City used the long ball in the first game to open up a big lead. Jovan Rosa started what turned out to be a tremendous day with a two-run, opposite field shot in the first. Scott Woodward's RBI single in the top of the third pushed TC ahead 3-0. After a walk to Yazy Arbelo, Rosa connected on his second homer of the game and eighth of the year, a three-run missile to left field, doubling the advantage to 6-0.

In the fifth inning, it was Arbelo who supplied the power with his 15th homer of the year, a three-run blast to push the lead to 9-0. After giving up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, Traverse City responded with four more runs in the top of the sixth. Rob Benedict brought home two runs on a single before he scored on an error by the first baseman. Rosa added his franchise-record sixth RBI of the game on a sac fly to up the advantage to 13-2.

Washington put up six runs in the span of six batters in the last of the sixth, but got no closer. Scott Vachon (2-1) picked up the win in the first game for Traverse City by allowing two runs on six hits in five innings. A.J. Holland (0-2) gave up six runs on five hits in three innings to take the loss.

In the nightcap, Washington jumped out a 4-1 lead through the first three innings with all four of their runs scoring with two outs. Sean Gusrang provided the Beach Bums' first run with a two-out RBI double in the second.

TC loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning, but Al Yevoli got out of it with back-to-back strikeouts. In the sixth inning, though, Yevoli gave up the second RBI double of the game to Gusrang, cutting the Washington lead to 4-2. The Wild Things brought in closer Jonathan Kountis, who got the next two batters in order.

Kountis (1-3) wasn't so lucky in the seventh, however, as Traverse City served him his second blown save of the year with a four-run rally. Benedict started the charge with a leadoff triple and scored on a Scott Woodward RBI groundout, making it 4-3. Arbelo singled and was pinch-ran for by Jeff DeBlieux who raced home on a triple to right-center from Rosa, knotting the game at four. Kevin Taylor followed with a go-ahead RBI single to give TC its first lead of the contest. Gusrang smacked his third double of the game to push Taylor around third, and he scored on a throwing error to make it 6-4.

Will Rankin, who had fired a perfect sixth inning, tossed the seventh inning and gave up a one-out double to Scott Kalamar. With two outs, C.J. Beatty flied out to the warning track to end the game. Rankin (5-2) got the win in relief of Rusty Shellhorn, who gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Rosa had a huge day for Traverse City, going a combined 6-for-7 with a double, triple, two homers, four runs scored and seven RBI. Benedict (4-for-8, 2B, 3B, 4 R, 2 RBI), Woodward (2-for-8, 3 R, RBI), Arbelo (3-for-7, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI), and Gusrang (3-for-8, 3 2B, 2 RBI) all recorded at least one multi-hit game during the twinbill.

Having won three consecutive series, the Beach Bums now return home for a season-long nine-game homestand. Traverse City welcomes in the Florence Freedom for a three-game set starting on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Tanner Tripp (1-7, 4.97) will start for TC. In addition to a typical Two-for-Tuesday where fans can two chairback seats for the price of one, one lucky fan will win two round trip tickets to New Orleans as part of Mardi Gras night.
