Normal CornBelters News Release
Florence, Ky. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, rode an opening-game pitching gem from Mike Schweiss for a 3-2 win, but mustered only one hit in a rain-shorted seven-inning nightcap in a 2-0 loss to the Florence Freedom on Sunday at UC Health Stadium.
In the opener, the CornBelters struck first by drawing two walks to lead off the third inning, scoring one on a fielder's choice by Mike Schwartz and the second on a double inside the third base bag by Sam Judah, with an RBI single by Aaron Dudley scoring Judah to put the Belters up 3-0.
Schweiss continued to mow down Freedom hitters, retiring the first 20 before surrendering a flare double down the right field line by Sam Eberle with two outs in the seventh inning. Schweiss left the game with two outs in the eighth inning after giving up consecutive hits, and both runners scored on a Cole Miles single.
Schweiss (3-2) earned his second consecutive win since returning from the injured list, giving up three hits while walking one and striking out six in his 7 2/3 innings. Eric Anderson recorded the final four outs for his second save. Peter Gehle (3-5) took the loss despite holding the Belters to three hits over his eight innings.
In the nightcap, the Freedom struck first in the second inning by capitalizing on an outfield error and a Miles RBI base hit. The hosts added a run in the seventh by loading the bases and scoring a run on a fielder's choice, cutting down a runner returning to third but just after the run scored. Heavy rain moved into the area as that inning ended, forcing a delay and the eventual end to the contest.
Florence closer Jorge Marban (4-4) earned the win in his first professional start and longest appearance with the Freedom, holding the Belters hitless through his five innings. Matt Packer (2-2) took the loss.
The Belters take Monday off and take on the Gateway Grizzlies in a three-day, four-game series at the Corn Crib beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday with the opener's first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday is Busey Bank Kids Night with a scheduled appearance by the Banana Derby. Details can be found at the team web site, www.normalbaseball.com. The games can be heard live at www.normalbaseball.com beginning 10 minutes before the scheduled first pitch.
