Florence Y'alls News Release
(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (30-43) dropped game one of Sunday's scheduled double header by a score of 3-2 but bounced back to shutout the Normal CornBelters (35-38) by a score of 2-0 in a rain shortened game two at UC Health Stadium.
In game one the CornBelters managed only three hits against Freedom starter Peter Gehle (3-5) but still pulled out the victory thanks to a big third inning.
Gehle walked the first two batters in the third and Santiago Chirino bunted the runners over. Mike Schwartz followed with a RBI grounder to plate the first run of the game. Sam Judah followed with a RBI double to extend Normal's lead to 2-0. Aaron Dudley singled home Judah for the third run of the inning.
Meanwhile Normal starter Michael Schweiss (3-2) did not allow a Freedom player to reach base until Sam Eberle doubled with two outs in the seventh. Florence finally got on the board in the eighth as Rolando Gomez singled with two outs. Chance Ross followed with a double and that was it for Schweiss. New pitcher Eric Anderson surrendered a two-RBI single to Cole Miles as the Freedom pulled within one.
But they would get no closer as the CornBelters held on for the victory.
In game two, spot starter Jorge Marban (4-4) was brilliant, firing five no-hit innings. It was Marban's first start since high school and the fifth year pro made the most of his opportunity. Having thrown 77 pitches, the Freedom brought in Chris Cummins to pitch the sixth. Cummins gave up the first hit of the game for Normal but kept the shutout going.
Meanwhile on offense the Freedom jumped on top in the second inning as Miles came through again, this time with a two-out RBI bunt single that was placed perfectly between first and second.
They added another run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 2-0 on a RBI single from Jacob Tanis.
The combination of Marban, Cummins and Daniel DeSimone tossed the Freedom's fifth shutout of the year. The game ended early due to rain after the completion of the seventh inning.
With the win the Freedom take the series from Normal two games to one. Florence has an off day on Monday before traveling to Traverse City on Tuesday to take on the Beach Bums. Chuck Weaver (4-5, 2.19 ERA) takes the mound for game one of the three-game set. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and all the action can be heard at http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
