Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 10, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind 6-0 after three innings of play and rallied back to make it 6-3, but two more Joliet runs scored in the bottom of the sixth before rain first delayed the game, then rendered the field conditions unfit to continue in a six-inning 8-3 Miners loss to the Slammers at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.
Joliet took the immediate lead with two runs on only one hit off of Jack McGeary (0-2) in the first inning, with three walks in the frame.
Four more in the third chased McGeary and put the Miners down by six before they managed a single baserunner off of Joliet starter Ethan Carter (1-1).
It was Jon Eisen who broke that streak with a single in the fourth, and he came around to score on a two-out triple by Frank Martinez to get the Miners on the board. With reliever James Woods holding the Slamers' offense at bay, Southern Illinois would rally for two more runs in the fourth, driven in by Aaron Gates on a single with the bases loaded.
After Woods surrendered a baserunner in the bottom of the inning, however, Grant DeBruin hit a deep home run to center field off of Race Parmenter to make the score 8-3. The game was delayed shortly thereafter as the rains came down. The weather slowed to a stop in around 30 minutes, but buildup of water on the field prevented the game, which by then was already an official game having lasted for at least five innings, from continuing.
The Miners and Slammers will play a rubber match game on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in the series finale, with Rick Teasley on the mound opposed by former Miners right-hander Travis Bradshaw.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
