Arrojo's Two Run Homer Wins Another for Freedom
August 24, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, KY-The comeback kids did it again on Friday night as they won another game when trailing late. The Washington Wild Things(38-50) had a 3-1 lead going into the 8th, only to see the Florence Freedom(50-38) rally for a 4-3 victory. It was the Freedom's tenth win this year when trailing after the 5th inning and their sixth in a row. The Freedom trail Lake Erie by .5 game for the final wild card spot with 8 games to play.
It was a pitcher's duel most of the night between Washington right hander Justin Hall and Freedom righty Brandon Mathes(4-0). With the game scoreless going into the 4th, Peter Fatse changed that with one swing of the bat. Fatse homered for the 8th time of the year with his solo shot over the right center field fence. Mathes didn't allow any runs until the 8th inning. He walked AJ Nunziato, and then Gus Benusa singled. Two batters later Rick Devereaux hit a SAC Fly to center which tied the game at 1-1. Shain Stoner and Andrew Heck then followed with back to back RBI doubles giving the Wild Things a 3-1 lead.
The Freedom though came back much like they have all season long in the very next inning. John Malloy hit a towering homerun to lead off the inning down the right field line to make it 3-2. It was his 13th of the year. After Hall retired the next two batters, David Harris doubled deep to center starting the rally. Washington went to their bullpen bringing in their bullpen specialist Orlando Santos(1-1). Santos faced Junior Arrojo who greeted him with a two run homer over the fence in left field to give the Freedom a 4-3 lead. It was Arrojo's 4th homerun of the year. That homerun proved to be the difference as Jorge Marban racked up his 13th save in the 9th and earned his third in as many games.
Mathes collected the win, pitching 8 innings allowing 9 hits on 3 earned runs. He matched a season high with 8 strikeouts. Hall earned a no decision after going 7.2 innings giving up 5 hits on 3 earned runs while punching out 8. Santos got pinned with the loss serving up the game winning homer to Arrojo. Arrojo went 3-4 in the game with 2 RBI as Fatse also collected two hits.
The Freedom and Wild Things will continue their three game series Saturday night. RHP Chris Smith(8-6, 3.07) will go for Washington as the Freedom will counter with LHP Andres Caceres(7-3, 4.36). The game can be heard starting at 5:50 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
