River City Rascals News Release
Joliet, Ill. - River City starter Tony Marsala allowed four hits and walked just one against seven strikeouts and the Rascal offense exploded for 11 runs on 12 hits, taking their first win against Joliet at Silver Cross Field.
The Rascals (42-46) gave Marsala (5-7) a lead to work with, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning when Jason Patton doubled in Eric Williams after he started the game with a walk and Jeremy Synan singled to right to bring Patton home.
Marsala retired 11-straight after allowing his only base runner through the first five innings on a one-out single in the second and the offense continued to pile on runs.
Synan started the fourth with a single and Charlie Lisk doubled him to third before Corey LeVier hit a sac-fly to center and Chris Andreas followed with a run scoring single to push the Rascal lead to 4-0. After a sac-hit from Matt Serna, Ben Hewett, who just missed his first professional homerun in his previous at-bat, drove a pitch well out to right-center for a two-run homer in front of his former teammates to stretch the River City lead to 6-0.
The Rascals added four runs in the fifth. After Sanders, Patton, and Synan reached to load the bases with no outs, LeVier drove in two with a double to right and would later score after Serna bounced one past third that was ruled an error for a 10-0 lead.
Marsala induced a double play to end the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings en-route to his first shutout this season.
Jason Patton drove in the final run in the eighth scoring Williams after his one-out single.
With the win, the Rascals have now won five-straight series openers and will look to take the series tomorrow with first pitch set for 6:05.
