Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio - The Traverse City Beach Bums struck out the Lake Erie Crushers 14 times on Friday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, as the Beach Bums took the series opener, 3-1.

The loss for the Crushers (50-38) drops them back into a three way tie in the race for the Frontier League's final wild card spot, while the victory for the Beach Bums (59-29) extends their winning streak to six.

The Crushers were held to just a run on four hits, one night after they set season highs with 17 runs and 23 hits. Two of their four hits went for extra bases, and they scored their only run in the first inning.

The Beach Bums plated all three of their runs in the top of the first inning. Brian Heere stroked a one out single before stealing second base. Eric Gonzalez-Diaz struck out Jose Vargas for the second out of the inning, and twice was one strike away from wrapping up a scoreless first inning.

Gonzalez-Diaz walked Chase Burch after starting him out with a pair of strikes, and then hit Jeff Flag with a 1-0 pitch. He was ahead of Kyle Colligan, 1-2, when Colligan stroked a three-run double to the gap in right center.

J.C. Figueroa belted a double down the line in left to start the home half of the first inning. Figueroa then made his way to third on a passed ball, and scored Lake Erie's lone run on a wild pitch.

Reid Kelly (9-3) retired 16 batters in a row after allowing the double to Figueroa and never gave the Crushers a chance.

Lake Erie had the tying runs aboard in the sixth inning, with men on first and second and one out, when Kelly struck out both Daniel Bowman and Jason Taylor. That was Lake Erie's only real threat the rest of the way.

Kelly tossed 6.2 innings, and allowed just an unearned run on two hits while fanning 11 in the process to score the victory. Matt Miller (10) tossed the final 1.1 innings of the contest to score the save. Gonzalez-Diaz allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six in a losing effort.

Figueroa paced the Crushers offensively, going 2-for-4 on the night with a double and a base hit. Brian Erie was the only other Crusher to reach multiple times, going 1-for-2 with a single and a walk.

The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Left hander Paul Fagan (7-7, 3.25) will start for the Crushers, and the Beach Bums will counter with left hander Bennett Whitmore (5-3, 4.15). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
