
CornBelters fall to Grizzlies

SAUGET, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell to the Frontier League West Division-leading Gateway Grizzlies 13-1 on Friday night at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies began the scoring in the second inning as Jon Myers led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Antone DeJesus and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by John Shelby. DeJesus moved to third on an error and scored an unearned run on a single to left by Ben Ives to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. The Grizzlies extended the advantage to 3-0 with lead-off home run in the third inning by Chris McClendon.
The CornBelters answered in the fourth as Randy Wells homered to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Gateway advanced the lead to 4-1 in their half of the fourth when Shelby doubled and and scored on a single to left by Ives. The Grizzlies made it 5-1 in the fifth inning when Rogelio Noris singled and scored on a Myers double plus an error. Myers came home on a groundout to first to increase the Gateway lead to 6-1. Shelby continued the inning with a single and made it 7-1 when he scored on an Alex Guthrie triple.
The Grizzlies pushed ahead 8-1 in the seventh when DeJesus was hit by a pitch, moved to third on two singles and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ives. Jonathan Johnson clubbed a three-run homer with two outs in the seventh to give the Grizzlies an 11-1 lead. Myers hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the final margin.
The starters each went seven innings and took the decisions, with Tim Brown (11-2) picking up the win and Jacob Liedka (2-12) taking the loss.
The CornBelters continue the series in the Metro East area with a Saturday evening contest against the Grizzlies. Right-hander Drew Provence (5-2, 3.22 ERA) takes the ball for Normal against Gateway righty Brett Zawacki (1-2, 5.76 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pre-game on WJBC.com at 6:50 from GCS Ballpark.
