Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-52) vs. RIVER CITY RASCALS (41-46)

Friday, August 24 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #88 - Home Game #46 (35-52), (18-27)

RHP #27 Matt Sommo (2-4, 4.62 ERA) vs. RHP #12 Tony Marsala (4-7, 3.57 ERA)

Last time out.

Joliet fell 5-2 last night. Tommy Mendoza (4-6) tossed eight innings, his longest outing as a Slammer, and struck out a personal best with Joliet nine batters but took the loss. An Eddie Rodriguez home run, his fourth of the series, put Florence up 2-0 in the first inning. They tacked on an unearned run in the second when a run scored on a Kyle Zimmerman error. Joliet rallied to cut the Florence lead to 3-2 in the top of the third. With one away Zimmerman singled. Matt Mirabal reached base as well and a passed ball moved both runners up 90 feet. Brad Netzel smacked a RBI grounder and Abel Nieves followed with a RBI single to drive in the second run of the game for Joliet. Florence responded in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out Drew Rundle drew a walk and Jim Jacquot followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. Neither team would score after that.

For Starters.

Matt Sommo is coming off a rough outing on August 18 against the Lake Erie Crushers. He went only two innings, giving up six runs on six hits. Sommo walked three and struck out two as he took the loss. Sommo began the 2012 season with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association. He most recently pitched for the defunct London Rippers. He played his college ball at Division II University of New Haven. He led all team starters in 2011 with a 4-1 record and a miniscule 1.29 ERA. Sommo struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while walking just 12. Over his collegiate career he carried a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1.

Against River City.

The Slammers are 2-1 against the Rascals this season. With a series win the Slammers would clinch the season series against the Rascals. The only team Joliet has won a season series with this year is the Road Warriors (3-0). However they have a chance to win the season series against Washington and Normal in the final two series of the year.

Home woes.

The Slammers are currently 18-27 at home this year, the worst home record in the Frontier League.

Mr. RBI.

Erik Lis leads the Slammers with 44 RBI on the season. David Fox also has 44 RBI but he is on the DL.

Team hitting slump.

The Slammers are only hitting .206 as a team over the past 10 games.

Losing streak.

The Slammers are currently on a nine-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in franchise history. They are currently a season worst 17 games under the .500 mark.

Workhorse.

Rookie left-hander Geoff Brown made his league-leading 43nd appearance of the season out of the bullpen Tuesday night. Brown currently sports a 3.86 ERA in 39.2 innings with 44 strike outs.

Netzel heating up.

Brad Netzel is currently working on a 17-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 30 of the team's past 32 games. He went 5-12 in the team's most recent series against Florence. Netzel's 17-game hitting streak is the longest in franchise history.

Walk this way.

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 52 walks this season, good for sixth in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 38 times in 301 at bats.

Error indicator.

Joliet is 11-39 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not make an error.
