Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

AVON, OH - The Traverse City Beach Bums got a dominating pitching performance out of Reid Kelly as the Beach Bums made three first inning runs hold up in a 3-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers, sending Traverse City to the playoffs for the second time in team history.

Both teams got all the runs they would get for the game in the first inning. With one out, Brian Heere singled for the Beach Bums. Two batters later, Chase Burch walked followed by Jeff Flagg being hit by a pitch. Kyle Colligan cashed in with a double to right-centerfield for a bases clearing double to put Traverse City up 3-1.

In the bottom of the inning, J. C. Figueroa singled and moved to second on a groundout. Figueroa would take third on passed ball and came in to score on a wild pitch.

From there it was the Reid Kelly show. The Beach Bums right-hander retired the next 16 batters he faced. All told, Kelly (9-3) struck out a career-high 11. Nick Capito came on in the seven and struck out three batters, before turning the ball over to Matt Miller who notched the final four outs for his 10th save of the year. Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (7-8) took the loss for Lake Erie.

The middle game of the series comes up on Saturday with Bennett Whitmore (5-3, 4.15) on the mound for the Beach Bums against Paul Fagan (7-7, 3.25) for Lake Erie. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 6:45 p.m. For tickets to all Beach Bums home games, call 943-0100, visit tcbeachbums.com or stop by the Wuerfel Park ticket office.
