Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars have lost three straight games to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers by a total of four runs, including a 4-2 defeat Wednesday night in front of 3,168 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Cougars starter John Herrera posted a quality start but left the game with no outs in the seventh inning after getting hit on the right elbow by a line drive, which marks the second time this season a Cougars pitcher has been hit by a liner and left a game against the Rattlers.
Herrera allowed a run in the first and one in the third but settled down afterward. After three scoreless frames, he started the seventh but got nailed on his pitching elbow by a line drive from Juan Beltran. Jason Fernandez relieved Herrera, but the run scored. Herrera (2-4) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits over six innings. After walking a career-high five in his previous start, he walked just one and struck out five. Fernandez gave up a tally in the eighth for a 4-0 count.
The Cougars' offense mustered just three hits through the first eight innings, two of which belonged to Mike Affronti. Rattlers starter Anthony Varvaro (3-4) posted six frames of one-hit pitching before giving way to the bullpen. Jermaine Mitchell walked to lead off the ninth against Rollie Gibson, and Greg Dowling singled. Alex Valdez drove in run with a single, and Dowling scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 before Drew Fiorenza put out the fire for his first save.
The Cougars (11-33) and Rattlers (14-29) conclude their two-game series Thursday night at 6 CDT. Henry Rodriguez (0-1, 4.76) will take the mound against Tony Butler (0-3, 5.14).
