Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GENEVA, IL -- Kuo Hui Lo went 4-for-4 and Anthony Varvaro pitched six innings of one-hit, shutout baseball to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 4-2 victory over the Kane County Cougars Wednesday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The win was Wisconsin's third straight, their first three-game winning streak of the season.
The Rattlers (14-29) grabbed the early lead with an RBI ground out by Carlos Peguero in the top of the first.
Kane County (11-33) momentarily took the lead on a two-run home run by Michael Affronti in the bottom of the second. Affronti lined a pitch from Varvaro off the top of the left field wall. Home plate umpire Adam Hamari called the play a home run. After an argument from the Timber Rattlers, Hamari talked it over with base umpire Alex Ortiz and the play was ruled a double. Varvaro got out of the inning and kept the Cougars off the scoreboard.
After the second inning ended, Kane County manager Aaron Nieckula and pitching coach Don Schulze were ejected from the game by the umpiring crew.
Wisconsin got another run in the top of the third inning. Lo doubled to start the inning. Carlos Triunfel singled him in for a 2-0 lead.
Varvaro cruised through his next four innings of work. He walked Mike Massaro three times, but allowed just one hit and struck out two for his third victory of the season.
The Rattlers picked up a little insurance on an RBI single by Lo in the seventh and a throwing error that allowed a run to score in the eighth.
Kane County tried to rally in the ninth. The Cougars got two runners aboard with one out. Then, Drew Fiorenza entered the game. He allowed an RBI single to Alex Valdez and threw a wild pitch that let in another run. But, Fiorenza got the final two outs of the game to preserve the Rattler win.
The Rattlers and Cougars face each other Thursday night. Tony Butler (0-3, 5.14) is the scheduled Rattler starter. He will take on Henry Rodriguez (0-1, 4.76). Game time at Elfstrom Stadium is 6:00pm.
