Fort Wayne, IN - Wizards first baseman Daryl Jones has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, May 22 and outfield Mike Epping has been promoted to Fort Wayne from the San Diego Padres extended spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona.
Epping was drafted in the 13th round of the 2006 June Amateur Draft out of the University of New Orleans. He appeared in 68 games with the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League last season and hit .265 with three home runs and 19 runs batted in.
He led the Northwest League in runs scored with 53 and was fourth with 34 walks. Epping also led the Emeralds with 17 stolen bases and sacrifices with four. He was second on the team in games played and at-bats with 268.
Jones is currently hitting .241 with seven doubles and 15 runs batted in. His seven doubles are second on the team and his RBI total is third best for the Wizards offense.
Fort Wayne wraps up the current 11-game, 12-day road trip with two more games against the Clinton Lumber Kings (Texas Rangers affiliate) today and tomorrow before returning to Memorial Stadium at 6:00 p.m. on Friday for the first of two games against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate).
Super Bowl Champion and Indianapolis Colts punter Hunter Smith will be a guest of honor in the Huntington University Christian Speaker series with the Wizards. Smith will give a post-game testimonial following the Wizards game against the South Bend Silverhawks (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate) on Wednesday, May 30.
After his testimonial, Smith and Chris Wilson, who make up the band Connersvine, will also perform.
