Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (May 23, 2007) - After scoring 17 runs in the first two games of this series, the Great Lakes Loons (19-25) were held in check in the Burlington Bees (18-25) 4-2 victory at Community Field tonight. Starter Matt Campbell allowed one run over five innings for the win and Mario Santiago finished the final four innings for the save to get the Bees their first victory in three games in this series.

The run against Campbell (2-2) came in the top of the first inning. Trayvon Robinson led off the game with a bunt single and when Campbell threw a pick-off attempt over the head of Brady Everett at first and down the right-field line for an error, Robinson raced all the way to third. Bridger Hunt followed with a single to right to drive in the run. Campbell struck out the next two batters, but allowed another hit and a walk to load the bases before fanning Adolfo Gonzalez to end the inning. Campbell allowed just two more hits the rest of his outing and finished with a season-high six strikeouts, one shy of his career mark.

The Bees got on the board against Loons' starter Cody White (3-5) in the second inning. Everett led off with a double and after two flyouts, O.D. Gonzalez drew a walk. Jeremy Jirschele followed with a line drive to right-center field for a hit to bring in Everett and when Robinson booted the ball for an error, Gonzalez was waved in to score and gave the Bees a 2-1 lead. The Bees added another run against White in the fifth. With one out, Derrick Robinson lined his third hit of the game to match his season and career-high, moved to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a base hit by Chris McConnell. Jeff Bianchi followed with a ground ball between shortstop and third that Francisco Lizarraga misplayed for an error. With the infield back, Robinson was going to score anyway, so Bianchi was credited with an RBI. Yulkin German took over for White in the sixth and allowed the Bees' final run in the seventh. With two outs Bianchi reached with his second hit and scored from first when Everett lined a triple to the wall in deep left-center for a 4-1 lead.

Santiago finished the game on the mound for the Bees and earned his first save of the season and just the second of his career. The Bees' pitching staff now has eight saves for the year by eight different pitchers. The Loons' final run came in the ninth and was unearned. Gonzalez led off with a single and advanced to second when Michael Thompson mishandled a bouncing ball at first. The runners advanced to second and third on a groundout by Juan Apodaca and Gonzalez scored as Robinson grounded out to second. Santiago then got Hunt to groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Matt Morizio was 0-2 with two walks to end an eight-game hitting streak. Alvi Morel also went hitless to end his season-best four-game streak. Bianchi did extend his season-high hit streak to five with his third straight multi-hit game.

The Bees and Loons complete this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Harold Mozingo (2-5, 4.75) will start for the Bees against LH Clayton Kershaw (4-1, 2.84), the Dodgers' top draft pick in last year's draft. The gates will open at 6:00 for Thirsty Thursday sponsored by the Sombrero Bar & Grill and Classic Hits KQ92. Fans get 2-for-$3 specials on bottles of Pepsi products and 2-for-$4 specials on cans of beer. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
