Lugnuts Power Past Peoria

Lansing Lugnuts News Release

Peoria, Ill.- For the second straight evening, the Lansing Lugnuts cracked three home runs. The difference Wednesday night is that they came out on top, as the Lugnuts beat Peoria 8-2 at O'Brien Field. Lansing has now hit seven longballs in the series, increasing their league lead to 32 this season.

The Lugnuts took the lead in the third inning with a two out rally off of Peoria starter Jake Renshaw. With two men on, Sean Shoffit tripled off of the wall in left field to put the Lugnuts ahead 2-0. Joey Metropoulos followed that with a double to drive in Shoffit and give Lansing a 3-0 lead.

The three runs would be enough support for Lansing starting pitcher Nate Starner (4-4), who tossed six innings and allowed just two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits while garnering the win. Josh Lansford's single in the third was the first hit that Starner had given up in his last 10 1/3 innings.

The power display for Lansing began in the fifth when Yuber Rodriguez smacked a solo homer off of the foul pole in left to put the Lugnuts ahead 4-1. It was his second homer in as many nights, as he is now 8-for-15 in the series.

Matt Liuzza extended the lead for Lansing by hitting a two-run clout to left-center field in the sixth to make it 6-2.

Not to be outdone, Sean Shoffit also homered for the second straight night by blasting a two-run shot in the seventh to put the Lugnuts ahead 8-2. Shoffit finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Edward Rodriguez picked up the save for Lansing, throwing the final three innings of the game and surrendering just one hit.

The win for Lansing (23-19) secures a winning road trip. The Lugnuts will now try to take the series from Peoria (21-23) on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. EST.
