Andy Marte Named IL Batter-of-the-Week

Buffalo Bisons News Release

The International League announced Monday that Buffalo Bisons infielder Andy Marte has been named the IL Batter-of- the-Week for the period from June 12-18. Marte hit .346 (9-26) with a double, five home runs and 12RBI in the seven games. He is the first Herd player to win the honor this season.

Marte, 22, is on a torrid stretch at the plate as he has homered in seven of his last nine games. The powerful stretch actually began on June 10 in Charlotte as Marte hit a solo home run in Buffalo's 8-4 victory over the IL-leading Knights. Marte then homered in the next two games, his fifth and sixth of the season, becoming the first Bison hitter to homer in three consecutive games this season.

Marte didn't homer on June 13, but did have a two-run double in a 3-2 loss in Durham. Then in the second game of a doubleheader against the Bulls on June 15, Marte started a new home-run streak as his two-run blast lifted the Herd to a 4-0 win. Marte homered again on Friday to close out an eight-game roadtrip with five homers and 10RBI. With the Bisons back in Western New York, Marte has homered in each of the first two games of an eight-game homestand.

Marte is currently one homer shy for the Buffalo Bisons all-time record for consecutive games with a home run. Three Herd batters have homered in five straight games. Hall of Famer Ollie Carnegie was the first to do it in 1938. Infielders Carlos Garcia (1992) and Bill Selby (1998) both accomplished the feat in the team's Modern Era.

On the year, Marte is hitting .269 (67-249) with 15 doubles, 10 home runs, 30RBI and 36 runs scored in 66 games. He currently leads the Bisons in homers, is 2nd in walks (25), 3rd in doubles, and T3rd in RBI.

Marte was acquired by the Cleveland Indians in a seven-player trade with the Boston Red Sox on January 27, 2006. Bisons' teammate Kelly Shoppach also came to the Tribe in that deal in exchange for former Herd outfielder, Coco Crisp.
