HANG TEN
SkyChiefs first baseman Kevin Barker went 1-for-3 yesterday against the Clippers, extending his hit streak to 10 games. During the string, his second string of 10 or more this season, Barker's hitting .349 (15-43). He hit .318 (14-44) during his in 13 game streak between April 28th and May 11th.
DEUCES WILD
Chad Mottola's 2nd inning double last night pushed the team's streak of games with at least one twobagger to 17. The SkyChiefs continue to pace the IL with 153 doubles this season including 38 during the current 17 game streak.
HATTIG PREFERS THE RIGHT SIDE
Switch hitting infielder John Hattig has appeared in 14 games at first-base this season and 28 games at third base. While playing the right-side of the infield he is hitting .304 (17-56) and while playing the leftside he is hitting .224 (22-98). He is hitting .290 (38-131) from the right-side of the plate and hitting .213 (13-61) from the left side.
MOTTOLA WATCH
Chad Mottola 1-for-4 yesterday evening against the Clippers and scored the SkyChiefs' only tally. Mottola has at least one hit in 15 of his past 16 appearances and has hit .378 over that span (23-66) with 10 doubles, 3 homers and 16 RBI. Mottola has smacked at least a pair of hits in seven of the past nine games. The outfielder's second-inning single Wednesday night marked his 1700th in the Minors in 15 seasons as a professional. He stands in fourth place on the all-time Syracuse doubles list with 108 twobaggers and is now four shy of a tie with Rick Bladt ('70-'76) for third and also stands third on the alltime Syracuse home run list with 77.
TOUR DE IL
SkyChiefs right-hander Josh Banks makes his team leading 15th start this evening vs. the Clippers. Over his last 10 outings Banks has faced 10 different IL teams and the only opponents he has yet to face this season are Charlotte, whom the SkyChiefs have yet to play this season and Durham who the SkyChiefs have already completed their home and home with this season. Tonight will be just his 4th appearance against familiar foe and he is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA the second time around against an opponent.
REVERSAL OF FORTUNES
After the first 35 games of the season the SkyChiefs had scored just 7 second inning runs and ten first inning runs and were outscored a combined 32-17 over the first two innings but despite facing early deficit's managed an 18-17 record. Including Rob Cosby's RBI single in the second inning last night Syracuse has now scored 47 second inning runs this season, the most runs in any inning and their second highest output has come in the first inning with 42. Over the last 35 games the SkyChiefs have outscored their opponents a combined 72-43 over the first two innings but have produced just a 12-23 record.
SKYCHIEFS RECORD VS. THE WEST IS HEADING SOUTH
After going a combined 6-6 vs. the IL West in April, the SkyChiefs are 4-10 versus the IL West combined in May and June.
