Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings out-hit the Toledo Mud Hens 13-9 Monday night at Frontier Field, but the numbers that mattered most: the 3-2 final score in Toledo's 11-inning win over the Wings, the third straight loss for Rochester. J.D. Durbin struck out nine in five innings, and Luis Maza hit a two-out, ninth inning solo home run to send the game into extra innings. Josh Phelps hit his second home run of the night off Pat Neshek to lead off the 11th inning and provide the winning run.
In the first inning, Wings starter Durbin worked out of trouble after allowing hits to the first two Hens batters by striking out two and stranding runners on first and third. Hens starter Colby Lewis wasn't so lucky. Jason Tyner had a stand up double to lead off the game, and after advancing to third off Gil Velazquez's bunt, Tyner was driven in by Heintz's single to left, giving the Wings an early 1-0 lead.
Tike Redman started the third with a triple for the Hens. After a strike out and pop fly out, Durbin looked poised to escape another threat. That was until Josh Phelps hit a two out, two run home run to center, giving the Hens a 2-1 lead. Durbin struck out his fifth batter of the day to end the inning.
Durbin worked the first five innings and exited after throwing 104 pitches, allowing the two runs and six hits, walking three and striking out nine - his best strikeout total of the season so far.
The Red Wings had two runners on in the fourth with one out but weren't able to cash in, then mounted a bigger threat in the sixth against Lewis. Rochester had runners at first and second after hits by Shawn Wooten and Alex Romero; Glenn Williams followed with a single but Wooten was gunned down at home trying to score from second base, and Romero was nabbed going from second to third on the same play. The unusual double play ended the scoring chance for the Wings.
Kevin Cameron tossed three effective relief innings, allowing just a hit and fanning two. That helped to keep Rochester close enough to tie the game in the ninth, on a long home run to left-center by Maza. With Mud Hens closer Lee Gardner on in relief, Maza fought through a 10-pitch at-bat with two outs to crush his second homer of the year to tie the score at 2-2 and move the game into extra frames.
Neshek (5-2) pitched three innings and took the loss, and Gardner (2-3) was the winning pitcher. Lance Davis pitched the 11th and recorded his first save. The Red Wings offense finished the game with nine runners left on base, and 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
