MANCHESTER, NH - Manchester Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera stopped 39-of-41 shots in the 2-1 loss to the Rochester Americans in front of 8,776 fans on American Pride Night at the Verizon Wireless Arena where the team honored fallen Manchester Police Officer Michael Briggs on Saturday night.
Manchester (4-4-1-0) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with nine points. Rochester (10-1-0-0) is in first place in the North Division and the league with 20 points.
The No.1 team in the league was held scoreless until the 19:06 mark of the second period when left wing David Booth scored his second goal of the season. Left wing Stefan Meyer sent the puck deep in the Monarchs zone and Booth picked it up. Booth almost lost the puck to the Monarchs defenseman at the right face-off circle but ended up getting his stick on the puck and awkwardly sent a shot past Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera to give the Americans a 1-0 lead.
Rochester made it 2-0 going into the locker room for the second intermission when Meyer picked up a rebound for his first goal of the season at 19:45. Defenseman Mike Funk sent a blast on net and the rebound popped out to Meyer who had an open net on the right side. Meyer's simple one-timer gave the Amerks a two-goal lead. Left wing Daniel Paille earned his sixth assist of season.
Monarchs left wing Matt Moulson cut the Amerks lead in half with his second goal of the season at 8:31 of the third period. Defenseman Eric Werner picked up a pass from center Patrick O'Sullivan and carried the puck along the right wing boards into enemy territory. Werner found Moulson in the slot for the lone goal by Manchester.
LaBarbera took his fourth loss of the season with 39 saves. Amerks goaltender Adam Dennis earned the victory stopping 26 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Rochester was 0-for-10 with the man advantage.
