Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Phantoms rattled off three straight goals in the second and third periods, and Petr Nedved bookended them with a pair of tallies, powering the club to an electrifying 5-4 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in front of 6,834 at the Wachovia Spectrum and giving Kjell Samuelsson his first win as a head coach. Coupled with a Flyers-Washington contest across the street at the Wachovia Center, a total of 26,398 fans watched hockey in South Philly on Saturday night. The Phantoms were victimized by two early penalties that gave the Penguins a 5-on-3 power play just over three minutes into the game. Marc-Andre Pouliot took advantage, giving Wilkes-Barre the 1-0 lead. The Phantoms equalized the affair at 8:09. Marty Murray, newly crowned in a pregame ceremony as the Toyota Phantoms Player of the Month for October, swept behind the net and backhanded a pass in front to Nedved, who slammed it home. Pouliot then responded with his second of the night with 2:06 remaining in the first to make it a 2-1 Penguins lead at the break. But the Phantoms evened things again at the 12:41 mark. Philadelphia received some good fortune when a Penguins clearing attempt hit an official and stayed in the zone. Murray moved the loose disc to Denis Tolpeko, who fired a slapshot from the top of the left circle past Wilkes-Barre goaltender Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers to tie the game at two. Philadelphia took its first lead of the night less than three minutes later, at the 15:06 mark. This time it was Triston Grant, wearing a newly-pressed No. 25 jersey after damaging his trademark No. 12 sweater in a first-period fight with Dennis Bonvie. Grant parked on the right post and jammed home a Daniel Corso feed to give his team a 3-2 advantage. The Purple took a 4-2 lead at 4:23 of the third period when Matt Davis picked up his first professional goal. He took a drop pass from Tony Voce and blasted a slapshot past Deslauriers from the high slot. Wilkes-Barre came back within a goal with 5:27 remaining in regulation while operating on a 5-on-3 power play advantage. Micki DuPont blasted a slapshot from the left point that trickled through Martin Houle to make it a 4-3 game. But Nedved opened up the lead back to two goals with a pretty two-on-one finish as he came in on a two-on-one with Corso. Nedved finished with an against-the-grain shelf shot, and it would turn out to be the game-winner. Penguins blueliner Rob Schremp finished out the scoring with a slapshot from the right point that beat Houle with 15 seconds left. But the Phantoms held on and halted the Penguins impressive seven game win streak. Houle earned the win with 29 saves on 33 shots, while Drouin-Deslauriers took the loss with 22 saves on 27 Phantoms chances. The win snapped a six-game losing skid for Philadelphia and was just the second loss of the young season for Wilkes-Barre.

The Phantoms close out their three-game weekend on Sunday in Hershey, where they visit the Bears in a 5:05 start. Follow the game on Phantomshockey.com or check out the B2 broadcast with Mike Thornton. Philadelphia returns to the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday, Nov. 10 to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:05 PM. Individual tickets for all Phantoms games, including $8 tickets for children 14 and under anywhere in the building, are on sale now at phantomshockey.com or by calling 800-298-4200.
