Iowa Chops News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Iowa Stars and the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights met for the third time in 10 days on Saturday night in Omaha. Turning in his best performance of the season, Iowa Goalie Tobias Stephan propelled Iowa to a 3-0 shutout win with a 24 save performance. Iowa pushed their record to 9-2 and moved into first place in the West Division.
The Stars cracked the scoresheet first on Saturday night. Junior Lessard, off to the side of the net, fed a pass to Mike Green who redirected the puck between the legs of Omaha Goalie Brent Krahn for a 1-0 lead. Green now has points in three straight games. Iowa has scored at least one power-play goal in nine of their 11 games.
With Iowa Defenseman Mario Scalzo in the penalty box for high-sticking, the Stars scored their fourth shorthanded goal of the season. Joel Lundqvist gathered a rebound off the end-wall and skated up the right side. Lundqvist waited for Loui Eriksson to join the play, where he then made a nice saucer pass to the streaking Eriksson. Eriksson fired a shot just under the crossbar and over the sprawling Brent Krahn. The goal was Eriksson's four of the season. Iowa took the 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
Lessard grabbed his second assist of the game with a helper on Mark Ardelan's third period power-play goal at 7:11. The goal came with Iowa in the midst of a five-on-three power-play. Iowa's penalty-killing unit denied Omaha on all six of their man-advantages.
Rookie Goaltender Tobias Stephan was spectacular in goal. The Swiss-born netminder stopped all 24 Omaha shots en route to his first North American professional shutout and his third win of the year.
