
Altoona quiets Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- Altoona third baseman James Boone hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the 6th inning to lead Altoona past Trenton 7-2 on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has still won five of its last seven games.
Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, Altoona (38-52) scored three runs to take the lead. Altoona catcher Steve Lerud led off the sixth inning with a single against Thunder starting pitcher Phil Coke (7-4). Third baseman Jason Bowers followed with a walk to put runners at first and second base with nobody out. A sacrifice bunt by second baseman Melvin Dorta put both runners in scoring position. Boone followed by belting a three-run home run to put the Curve in front 3-2. Altoona tacked on four runs of insurance in the ninth inning. Left fielder Jonel Pacheco and Bowers each had two-run singles as part of the big ninth inning for Altoona.
Trenton (55-36) took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning against Altoona starting pitcher Kyle Bloom (1-4). With two outs and a runner at third base, Thunder third baseman Chris Malec reached on an error by Altoona shortsop Luis Cruz plating a run to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, Trenton catcher P.J. Pilittere delivered an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. Pilittere finished the contest 2 x 4 with an RBI. The Thunder offense though only notched two hits after the first inning. Coke allowed four hits and three earned runs in six innings. He struck out six and walked two. Thunder reliever Mark Melancon was touched up for four hits and four runs (one earned) in 2 1/3 innings. Bloom earned his first win for the Curve as he gave up only two unearned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Altoona relievers Ronald Belisario and Juan Mateo combined to toss the final 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Mateo picked up his first save of the season with two scoreless frames.
Trenton and Altoona will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday night at Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Eric Hacker (4-1, 2.05) will start for Trenton against Altoona RHP Luis Munoz (1-2, 7.11).
