Altoona Follows up on Livin' La Vida Lunchmeat, Redundancy, and Bad Idea Nights

CURVE, PA - The Altoona Curve's "Wacky Wednesday" theme nights have garnered some national acclaim this season because of their originality and ability to be self-effacing. The franchise figures if you can't laugh at the foibles of human nature, then you may be taking yourself too seriously. So, from the club that mocked our affection for meat (Livin' La Vida Lunchmeat on May 19), repetitiveness (Redundancy Night on June 9), and poorly-conceived notions (Bad Idea Night on July 7), comes the latest Wacky Wednesday - "Sponsors in Wonderland" - on August 11 at Blair County Ballpark when the Curve host the Trenton Thunder in a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Where else but Minor League Baseball can a franchise poke fun at its propensity to sponsor everything in sight and combine it with a good value for companies looking to take part in a one night showcase? "Sponsors in Wonderland" will feature sponsorships of several items on the field and in the ballpark including the baselines by a medical staffing company (Allegheny Healthcare Staffing), home plate by a flooring company (Unique Flooring), and the video board by an audio/video retailer (Park Audio/Video). Other items to be sponsored include the infield dirt, screen behind home plate, foul poles, bases, coaching boxes, warning track, umpires' plate meeting, and the rosin bag (though a certain superstar basketball player has not made "The Decision" on that opportunity).

Baseball officials don't need to worry, the Curve are not going to paint or deface any of the playing surface to detract from the integrity of the game.

For their sponsorship, companies (or individuals) will receive 25 grandstand tickets to the game, logo recognition on the video board and corresponding public address announcements twice during the contest, a display table on the main concourse, a first pitch opportunity, a listing on a special flier handed to each fan, and a partridge in a pear tree. (Well, maybe not the partridge. By the way, when was the last time you saw a partridge?)

"Sometimes in sponsorships, teams and companies tend to gravitate toward the traditional ways to brand and drive business," said Curve General Manager Rob Egan. "There's a reason for that...they're effective. However, for one night this is an opportunity to poke a little fun at ourselves for putting a sponsor's name on anything we can think of while also giving a new or smaller company a chance to send their message in a unique way."

The Curve open a six-game homestand at Blair County Ballpark on Tuesday, August 10 against the Trenton Thunder (AA - New York Yankees).
