Chesapeake Baysox News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Bowie Baysox were held to just two hits Saturday as they fell 2-0 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The loss spoiled the return of right-handed pitcher Chorye Spoone and catcher Caleb Joseph, who had both spent time on the disabled list leading into the game.
The Baysox were shut out for the 10th time this season, the most times of any team in the Eastern League, and matched a season-low for hits in a game. Second baseman Ryan Adams, fresh off breaking the Baysox single-season doubles record in Friday's 13-2 romp over New Hampshire, recorded Bowie's first hit in the opening frame with a single to right field. Designated hitter Joel Guzman contributed the other in the top of the fourth inning, a single to left field, as third baseman Brandon Waring's 11-game hit streak crumbled.
Spoone went head-to-head with highly rated Toronto Blue Jays prospect Kyle Drabek on the mound and engaged in a tight pitchers' duel throughout his five innings. Spoone matched a season-low with two hits surrendered and posted his first walk-free outing of the season.
Drabek matched Spoone closely, also allowing just two hits, but earned the win by outlasting the Baysox starter and pitching through the sixth inning. Six innings was as far as Drabek would need to go, as Baysox reliever Brandon Cooney walked Callix Crabbe to begin the bottom of the sixth. Crabbe stole second base and then moved to third base on Darin Mastroianni's groundout to second. Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria handed Drabek the win with a single down the third-base line, plating Crabbe for a 1-0 Fisher Cats lead.
Cooney was charged with another run in the seventh inning, which he began by hitting third baseman Shawn Bowman. Bowman moved to second base on a ground out and scored on Jonathan Jaspe's single to left field to extend the New Hampshire lead to 2-0.
The Baysox were unable to recover from the two-run deficit, as they were set down in order in the eighth and ninth innings. Bowie and New Hampshire breezed through the game, which was completed in just two hours and eight minutes.
The loss drops the Baysox to 62-51 as they stay in second place in the Eastern League Western Division, trailing the Altoona Curve by 4.0 games. The Harrisburg Senators are 2.5 games behind the Baysox in third place.
Bowie takes one last crack at the Fisher Cats Sunday with a chance to win both this series and the season series between the clubs, which the Baysox currently lead 3-2. They return home Tuesday, August 10 for three games with the Portland Sea Dogs. That series includes a spectacular fireworks show on Tuesday, August 10, for Navy Night and Orioles Pride Night on August 12.
