Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Sea Dogs raced in front early and never looked back, holding off the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 9-6, in front of 7,160 at Hadlock Field on Saturday night. The victory for Portland sets up a rubber-match scenario in the series-finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Squirrels scraped a run across against Portland righty Blake Maxwell in the first inning. Brad Boyer notched a one-out infield-single and stole second base. With two outs, Brandon Belt lined a single to score Boyer into left-field for a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner endured a rough beginning in the bottom of the inning. Che-Hsuan Lin started the inning with a sun-aided double to right field. Nate Spears followed and bounced a single back up the middle to tie the game, 1-1. Ray Chang then clubbed a two-run home run to left-center field and Portland owned a 3-1 lead.

Richmond got one of those runs back in the top of the second. Conor Gillaspie led off with a double into the left-field corner. He moved over on a groundout from Sharlon Schoop and scored when Tyler La Torre lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.

However, the floodgates opened in the bottom of the frame as Portland raced to a five-run lead with a four-run inning against Tanner. Ryan Khoury laid down a bunt-single to start the frame and advanced to second when Matt Sheely singled behind him. Tanner then walked Lin to load the bases with nobody out. Tanner retired Spears and Chang sent a pop-fly out to second base. Boyer lost the baseball and it fell for a single. Khoury scored on the misplay, and the bases remained loaded. Luis Exposition then sent a bases-clearing double to the alley in left-center field as Portland went ahead, 7-2.

The Sea Dogs added another run against Tanner in the third when Lin brought in Khoury with a single. Tanner (7-8) left after three innings, surrendering a season-high eight runs on a career-high matching 11 hits. He endured his eighth loss of the season, walking one and logging just one strike out.

Portland capped their scoring when Chih-Hsien Chiang homered off of left-hander Andy Sisco leading off the bottom of the fifth inning. Chiang's second blast of the series put Portland in front, 9-2.

Maxwell (3-0) battled his way through five innings for the win. He allowed just two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out four.

The Squirrels fought their way back into the ballgame against former teammate Daniel Turpen in the sixth inning. The first four batters of the inning all recorded doubles to plate three runs. Gillaspie led off with a double and scored on a double from Sharlon Schoop. Schoop came in when La Torre doubled and Darren Ford brought in La Torre with the fourth double in the string. Richmond got within three runs at 9-6 when Clay Timpner singled on the infield, and Ford scored when Chang threw wildly toward first base. Turpen was tagged with four runs on five hits in the inning.

Right-hander Ryne Reynoso entered in the seventh and worked two perfect innings of relief. Righty Jason Rice closed it out with a scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the season.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. RHP Craig Westcott (2-1, 3.82) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Stephen Fife (6-3, 4.25) for Portland.
