Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves took down the Reading Phillies 8-4 on Saturday night at First Energy Stadium to win their third straight and second straight over Reading.
The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the top of the first against Reading starter Michael Cisco. Cale Iorg, for the second time in the last three games, led off and homered on the first pitch of the game. The solo shot, his eighth, put the âWolves up 1-0.
Erie added four runs in the second. Bryan Pounds extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games as he led off with his fifth home run for a 2-0 lead. Jeff Kunkel followed with a double and Alden Carrithers walked putting two on. With one out, Kody Kaiser slammed a monster home run, his third, to right center, making it 5-0.
In the fourth, the âWolves added two more runs, both scoring with two outs to put the lead at 7-0. Iorg singled to right bringing Kaiser to the plate. Kaiser hit a bloop single into shallow right and with heads up baserunning, Iorg scored from first. Brandon Jones then doubled home Kaiser for the second run of the inning. Kaiser would finish the day with a season-high four hits and four RBI.
Reading got on the board and knocked out Erie starter Brayan Villarreal in the bottom of the fourth. John Suomi led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Cody Overbeck walked putting on a pair for Tuffy Gosewisch. Gosewisch doubled home the baserunners making it a 7-2 game. Gosewisch came around to score on a one-out single by Michael Spidale cutting the Erie lead down to four at 7-3. With runners on first and second, reliever Jose Ortega retired the final two hitters of the inning, ending the Reading threat.
The âWolves went back ahead by five runs in the top of the fifth. Deik Scram singled with one out and stole second. With tow outs, Kunkel singled to left making it an 8-3 game.
Reading would score one run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Luis Marte when Spidale singled home Gosewisch making it an 8-4 game. The Phillies would get no closer. Reliever Rob Waite shut the door in the ninth working a 1-2-3 innings, preserving the Erie win.
Villarreal took the no-decision allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. It was his shortest outing as a SeaWolf.
Ortega (1-0) earned the win in relief. He worked 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.
The SeaWolves have hit five home runs in the first two games of the series and of the 11 runs Erie has scored, eight have come via the long ball.
