Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON -- Asdrubal Cabrera's offense guided the Akron Aeros (25-18) to the 5-4 win over the Altoona Curve (19-22) in front of 8,009 at Canal Park on Tuesday Night. His grand slam in the third inning put Akron up 4-1, before he pushed the lead out to 5-1 with an RBI-double in the fifth.
Altoona made a late charge scoring two in the eighth and putting the tying runs on base in the ninth with no one out. However, Randy Newsom allowed just one run and was able to recover to earn his first save in Akron.
Aeros starter, Shawn Nottingham was impressive again at home going seven innings, striking out six and gave up just one run on six hits. The one run came on his only mistake of the night, a towering home run by Randy Ruiz to lead off the the second inning. Reid Santos replaced Nottingham and allowed two runs on three hits in the eighth.
For the second straight day, Brian Barton tripled, while Pat Osborn recorded the only other extra base hit for Akron and he also scored twice.
Akron will look to continue its success on the homestand as they take on Altoona for the third time in the four game set this week. Akron will send Chuck Lofgren (3-3) to the mound to take on Kip Bouknight (4-1), who defeated the Aeros on May 6, going seven innings and allowing just one run.
