Akron takes third straight from Altoona

Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON -- The Akron Aeros (26-18) trailed 2-0 in the fifth before scoring five times between the fifth and sixth innings to down the Altoona Curve (19-23), 6-2. The Aeros put together a couple extra-base hits to tie the game in the fifth and took advantage of a huge error in centerfield to charge ahead with three runs in the sixth.

After tying the game in the fifth on an RBI-triple by Ryan Goleski and a sacrifice fly by Trevor Crowe, Akron lead off the sixth with back-to-back walks to Asdrubal Cabrera and Jordan Brown. Brian Barton followed with what looked like a lazy fly ball to center, but Andrew McCutchen and Matt Mearth had some confusion in left-center and the ball bounced in and out of McCutchen's glove. Cabrera scored on the play and led to Akron scoring two more times.

It was enough for the Aeros as starter Chuck Lofgren (4-3) went six strong innings, giving up two runs, which came on a Adam Boeve's home run to left. He struck out five and walked only one. Jensen Lewis replaced Lofgren and quickly sat down three-straight in the seventh, striking out two. Mariano Gomez pitched the final two innings for the save as Akron added one more insurance run in the eighth.

Akron will look to complete the four-game series sweep of Altoona tomorrow morning as the Aeros will host the fourth and final Education Day presented by Roadway at Canal Park. The game is scheduled to start at 10:35 a.m. as Akron sends Joe Ness (2-0) to the mound to face Josh Shortslef (0-5).
